a record and photo of a Swallowtail butterfly at Rozelle, Ayr today on the Ayrshire Birding forum.

Hi Alastair
Surely this has to be a captive-bred and released / escaped specimen.
The nearest colony is in Norfolk, and the emergence there is late May - June.

That was my first thought Jim - but apparently the European subspecies does arrive in the UK at times. I remain a bit sceptical, if only because I used to know a chap who raised huge moths and often let them go when they emerged. I found myself a bit annoyed by this practice.
