Hi Ron,

fascinating creature you have there. Spent some time on the web and I reckon it is the larva of a sawfly Platycampus luridiventris. Note the unusual lobes on each side of the body.

Ron,
How interesting, S & P mention Silver Birch as the food plant. My 'tree book' makes it look as though your mines are on Downy Birch. This based on leaf shape and number of veins, but it is none to clear on the subject. The habit of the tree is diagnostic... I reckon you are going to have to breed them out
and then get a gen' det' to be certain at species level.
