SPBF Walk Loch Ardinning 3/7/11 report

Postby ScottD » Tue Jul 05, 2011 6:41 am

For a change this summer the sun shone brightly :) & luckily the SPBFs had emerged in the last week here (very late this year)
I'll leave the official nos. to Scott Shanks to report but everywhere was full of Ringlets & we saw a good number of the target species Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary.
Some suspicion that nos. maybe down (could just be the late emergence) & certainly there seemed to be notably less Marsh Thistle for nectaring.
Other species seen - Green-veined White, Small Heath, Small Copper, Meadow Brown, Small Tortoiseshell & various moths.

Also noted were various types of damsel/dragonfly & appropriately enough some Greater Butterfly orchids in amongst the Heath Spotted & Marsh orchids.
Nice to show some people their first SPBFs & a thoroughly enjoyable day overall.

Thanks for that Scott! :)

It was a brilliant day. The total count of Small Pearl-Bordered Fritillaries during the walk was 75! Pretty fantastic considering that we didn't check all of the 'good' areas. Having said that, It definitely looked like they were still emerging, as there were only 37 seen the day before.
Ringlets were by far the most common species, at well over 287!
Might see if I can get back this weekend for a recount! :)

Cheers, Scott (S)
