I saw my first Green Hairstreaks of the year today (02/05/17) just over Ewe Hill on the edge of Kyle Forest, near Rankinston, Ayrshire (Grid Reference NS4511), I counted a total of 6 butterflies all found in the same small area within about 50 yards or each other along the edge of the forest.

I paid a weekend visit to Ayrshire in order to survey various boggy sites for Green Hairstreaks. A new site (and I think a new 10km square) is Barkip Moss (NS 339 509) near Beith. This is a heavily degraded raised bog with lots of Birch and an extensive carpet of Blaeberry. I didn't do a thorough count, but encountered 9 Green Hairstreaks on my walk around the site.

Another new site is in the Knockewart Hills behind Ardrossan/West Kilbride. It's a sheltered mire (NS 235 479) between a conifer plantation and a Birch wood on the boundary between Ardrossan and West Kilbride. It's boggy and supports lots of the vegetation typical of peat bogs: Cross-leaved Heath, Hare's-tail Cotton Grass, sphagnum moss and scattered Blaeberry. I counted 5 Green Hairstreaks on a walk across the site.
