Urban Butterflies

Hi everybody,

recent newspapers describe a dearth of butterfly records this summer in urban areas. No wonder with the weather. Today being bright and warm, I visited some of Kilmarnock's "Buddleia Wastelands" to see what was about.

At the old "Finefare" site at Tichfield Street ( Yes, Finefare - Kilmarnocks first proper supermarket opened by the chap from "Doctor Findlays Casebook") I was surprised by how vegetated the area was - Buddleia, lots of Ragwort and Red Bartsia:

Red Admiral 1
Small Tortoiseshell 2
Peacock 2

Further down the street a bit, at the old Tesco site by the Glencairn Square:

Peacock 10
Painted Lady 1

All the butterflies seen today were in good condition - not faded or tattered at all. At the second site, which is really crushed rubble and Buddleia dotted around, most of the butterflies were basking on the rubble.
