Small Blue reintroduction project work party days at Gailes Marsh, Irvine
Volunteers required for conservation work to create Small Blue habitat at SWT Gailes Marsh, Irvine. Work will include hedge planting and sowing/planting wild flowers. Reserve is adjacent to the golf courses to the south of Irvine and reached via Marine Drive.
Parking available beside the track by the field gate at NS323360. Meet at 10.45am and take a packed lunch if staying for the afternoon and work gloves if you have them. Please contact Scott Shanks (07793052501) or reserve manager Gill Smart for more details.

Spring into Life at Kelvingrove Park
Come along and help to create this new haven for widlife. Telephone 0141 287 7026 for more information. To celebrate International Year of Biodiversity a new meadow is being created near the riverside entrance to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Meadows are home to a wide range of birds, butterflies, bumblebees and bugs (biodiversity)

6th International Symposium, Reading University,
The theme for the Symposium is: The 2010 target and beyond for Lepidoptera and will include reviews of progress towards the 2010 target from the UK, Europe and countries throughout the world, as well as the latest science on how to reverse the decline of butterflies and moths, and conserve habitats. Glasgow & SW Scotland Branch Members' Day and 25th Anniversary Celebration!
2pm to 5 pm. Quaker Meeting House, Elmbank Crescent, Glasgow (opposite Charing Cross station). Branch member’s day with talks on butterflies and moths and conservation projects. Plus the Branch’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations! All Welcome.

Small Blue Reintroduction Project kidney vetch planting day
Practical Conservation day at SWT Gailes March reserve, Irvine to create habitat for the Small Blue butterfly. ALL WELCOME! Tasks for the day will include: 1. Planting about 500 kidney vetch plants, which are the caterpillar food plant for the Small Blue. 2.Having fun outdoors and enjoying some sunshine (hopefully!) Trowels and other tools will be provided (but if you have a trowel it might come in handy). If you have work gloves bring them along and don't forget to bring a packed lunch. Start 10.45 am. BOOK LAUNCH: An Annotated Checklist of the Larger Moths of Stirlingshire, West Perthshire and Dunbartonshire
John Knowler's book, that is being published by Glasgow Natural History Society, will be launched at a joint GNHS/ Butterfly Conservation event beginning at 6.00 pm in the Graham Kerr Building of Glasgow University on 11th May. John will give a talk on the importance of moths and moth recording in central Scotland to be followed by wine and nibbles at which the book will be available at a special launch price of £6.50 plus P & P. The book is 143 pages long with four colour plates.

Mabie Forest Butterfly Conservation Reserve
10am to 1pm. Celebrate International Day of Biological Diversity, as Forestry Commission Scotland open a new interpretive trail through Mabie Nature Reserve, and Butterfly Conservation Scotland launch a butterfly identification guide for Dumfries and Galloway. There will also be a rare chance to check moth traps, and hopefully to help ring young Tawny owls
Grid reference NX930700. The reserve is located four miles south of Dumfries, in the centre of Mabie Forest.

Moth and Bat Night
Join the RSPB team and staff from Butterfly Conservation to delve into the nocturnal world of moths and bats. Then come back in the morning to see what has crept in overnight.
Walk description: Gather around the moth trap to see what species are present. It is recommended that you bring a torch and insect repellent. Also, evening walk along the RSPB trails to look/listen for bats, may cover some distance as we search for bats.
Key species we will look for: Garden tiger moth, poplar hawk moth. Pipistrelle bats.
Suitable for: Families. General interest in wildlife. Evening explorers! Wheelchair and pushchair users please contact us for more details.

Chequered Skipper Weekend
Visit amazing Chequered Skipper habitat at 300-350 m at Glasdrum NNR, near Oban on the Saturday - Pearl-bordered Fritillary will also be on the wing.
On the Sunday when there is no public event at Glasdrum, you may wish to head off to historical Chequered Skipper sites in North Argyll or Lochaber.

Mountain Ringlet Weekend
Join committee member Andrew Masterman and botanist John Holland from The Scottish Agricultural College to see Mountain Ringlet and amazing herb-rich upland pasture at Beinn Chaorach & Cam Chreag near Tyndrum on Sunday 11 July. Meet at Auchertyre Farm car park NN353290 at 9.00am. Event expected to return to car park by 3.30-4.00pm but a shorter walk of just Beinn Chaorach can be done by those looking for a shorter day. A moderate level of fitness will be required and walking boots, waterproof and warm clothing and a packed lunch and drink will be essential.

BIG BUTTERFLY COUNT AND MARKS & SPENCER

Butterfly Conservation is teaming up with Marks and Spencer to launch the biggest ever public butterfly and moth count to date. You can join in and help us track butterflies and moths, so we know where they need our help the most. Find a sunny spot in your garden, local park or other open space and spend 15 minutes counting butterflies and moths. For more information, to download an ID chart and submit your sightings please visit the big butterfly count website.
